Born in 1884 in Palladam, to Venkobachar a renowned Sanskrit scholar with spiritual healing powers, he had access to music education through his first guru, a Muslim zamindar (landlord) better known as Shatkala Salem Narassaya who could sing in 6 speeds.
One other musician who could accomplish this feat is Shatkala Govinda Marar who had impressed Saint Thyagaraja that the latter composed the famous pancharatna krithi Endaro Mahanubavulu in Sree ragam. His tutelage together with his brothers under Sharaba Shastri (the blind prodigy), who first performed Carnatic compositions on the flute began when he moved to Kumbakonam at the age of 12 and trained for seven years with an almost monastic regime by singing and begging food for sustenance.
